The minutes of the 10 July conference call have been approved and posted on the Starlite Home Page.
Mark Tillack published the 6th Quarterly report on the Home Page.
The collection of the Starlite ANS papers has been printed in hard copy form and distributed to the team organizations.
Drafts of the Final Report sections are to be brought to the Madison Starlite meeting.
An agenda for the meeting has been sent out to the ARIES EXEC for comments. Several suggestions have been forwarded for incorporation.
Safety and Licensing
Bob Thayer reported that he is running the safety code and generating
optimistic data. His early data for the baseline LOCA indicates
that a significant dose would be released barring any mitigating
factor assumptions. But when the existing vessels and buildings
are considered, these containment structures would slow down the
release and the dose may go down by a factor of 100. He has evaluated
four LOCA cases which include tenelon, vanadium replacing tenelon,
a FWBS emissivity of 0.5, and an emissivity of 0.8. These four
cases yield different sets of maximum temperatures for the internal
components. The preliminary data was discussed, but any decision
is being withheld until final data can be presented at the upcoming
meeting.
Systems Studies
Bathke told the group that he had incorporated several changes
and improvements in the systems code. These were incorporation
of a new blanket and shield definition, a Zeff dependence, and
a new current drive power dependence on Zeff and edge density.
The optimization routine was not converging properly, perhaps
due to the discontinous costing of the TF coils when changing
from NbTi to Nb3Sn conductors. Ron Miller explained
the cost impact to change from NbTi to Nb3Sn is less
than had previously been thought due to elimination of ITER development
costs and application of the appropriate learning curve factors.
Plasma Physics
Steve Jardin reported that agreement was reached to assume the
plasma would radiate 100 MW of power including Bremsstrahlung
and impurity radiation from the plasma edge. TK Mau noted that
he had finished the current drive system modeling and supplied
the model to C. Bathke for incorporation into the system code.
He also has been refining the fuel delivery system requirements
for the reverse shear plasma and defining the fueling system hardware.
He had decided the baseline pellet should be 4 mm in diameter
with an appropriate speed to yield the right depth of penetration
and minimize the plasma density disturbance.
Engineering
ASC code results - Mark Tillack hopes that the next strawman
results will be close to the 7 May design point so all analyses
and point designs will be directly applicable. If the new strawman
is radically different, it is hoped the analyses would not need
to be redone, but the design databook will reflect the final strawman
parameters. Analyses results should be scaled to the final design
point. D-K Sze noted that care should be taken to make sure all
parameters are considered and used.
Design Integration and Configuration Development - Dick
Cole noted he is still updating his configuration based upon the
7 May model. Per the suggestion of C. Wong, Dick agreed to return
the depth of the divertor slot to the shorter value, not use the
extended depth option. Mark Tillack asked D. Cole and L. Waganer
to investigate the translation and transmission of their CAD files.
MDA can translate line drawings via IGES and we have FTPed them
to the ARIES server. Shaded image CAD files need a more sophisticated
translator such as STEP (IGES will not handle solids). Trial transfers
of these solid-image files are planned. We also will try to generate
PostScript CAD files for publication purposes.
Blanket and Shield - D-K Sze reported the divertor heat
transport calculations for 1 MW/m2 are complete and
will be reported at the upcoming meeting. The heat flux for the
final design point may be somewhat less, depending on C. WongÌs
results.
Divertor - C. Wong reported that X. Wang has been conducting
analyses and reporting the results to the divertor and blanket
teams. Clement has been having difficulty getting the divertor
design to handle the required heat load, thus has been assuming
the Zeff at the maximum value of 2.0 rather than the
suggested value of 1.7. It was suggested that Clement hold to
a Zeff of 1.7 and assume the core will handle 100 MW
of radiated power. Clement noted Tom Petrie was trying to solve
the coupled problem to find an integrated solution. Clement also
noted that the divertor coolant temperature may need to be lower
than desired in order to handle the required power level.
