17th IEEE/NPSS Symposium on Fusion Engineering

Tour of Lockheed Martin

ITER Central Solenoid

Model Coil Facility

A tour of the ITER CS model coil fabrication facility will be
available on Thursday afternoon, October 9. Tour participants should
register prior to the symposium in order to be admitted. Sign-up will be
possible in the symposium registration area for U.S. citizens ONLY.
The maximum number of participants is 50.
Free transportation will be provided in vans from the Bahia hotel.

The ITER CS model coil is a large layer-wound superconducting solenoid magnet that will test full-size ITER magnet components and manufacturing processes. The inner module of the CS model coil being fabricated by Lockheed Martin and MIT for DOE and ITER is approximately 9 ft. in diameter and 9 ft. tall (without leads) and will weigh 50 tonnes. The magnet uses advanced Nb3Sn superconductor and will produce a 13 Tesla magnetic field when combined with a Japanese built outer module. Visitors will be able to view different layers in various stages of fabrication, from initial winding to final assembly, and the equipment used for winding and fabrication.

The Lockheed Martin CS Coil facility is located within a US Naval installation, and therefore preregistration is required for non-citizens. Please respond to the Symposium Secretary with the following information no later than October 1 if you would like to participate.
