UK Fusion Veteran Ted Stringer Passes
January 5, 2016
Ted Stringer, who died on 20th December 2015, was a leading member of
the Culham Theory Division from its beginning in the 1960's, much
respected by his colleagues for his wide knowledge of plasma theory and
for his friendly and generous nature. Later, in the 1980's, he
transferred to the JET Theory Division, where he led the Analytic Theory
Group and was responsible for organising collaborations with theory
groups in the "member" countries. He was also a Director of the
International School of Plasma Physics held in Varenna. Amongst many
other contributions, he is remembered for his work on unifying the
various treatments of the myriad of plasma waves that appeared in the
literature in the early days, for his work on neoclassical and anomalous
transport theory, including ripple transport and the concept of the
'Stringer spin-up' mechanism for plasma rotation, and for providing a
model for the heating profile produced by alpha particles as result of
their finite orbits.
