On the occasion of his retirement from the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center, fusion researcher Dr. Dieter J. Sigmar has been presented the US Department of Energy's Distinguished Associate Award. The citation reads,"For your contributions to our understanding of plasma confinement, the physics of burning plasmas, and the role of the plasma edge, and your untiring efforts which have enhanced the standing of the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center as a major intellectual center for plasma physics research. Your commitment to international fusion collaboration and stimulation of theory programs around the world has been critical to our progress in fusion science research."
In a February 13 letter to Sigmar, DOE Associate Director for Fusion Energy Sciences, Dr. N. Anne Davies, said, "You have been an outstanding member of the fusion community, a voice of reason and moderation, with a large impact on the program both through your scientific accomplishments and your leadership qualities. We will miss your very active involvement in the program and hope that you will be willing to contribute your wisdom and experience when the program needs it."
